Setting up the CB Drums CB5 kit is straightforward and probably won’t take you more than 30 minutes maximum. But to get the best sound out of the drums (or any drum set for that matter), you’ll need to spend time tuning them—a skill better learned earlier than later for beginners.

The drum set comes with a drum throne, 12″ and 13″ mounted toms, 16″ floor tom, 22″ bass drum (with kick pedal), snare drum, ride and hi-hat stands. The drums are made of 9 ply shells that give the drums great resonance.

[wp-review] PROS:
Great value for the money; Durable and sturdy hardware

CONS:
Inferior drum heads; Cheap cymbals (not included with Amazon order)

The upper toms of the CB5 kit can be rotated and locked into any position using the sturdy memory locks included with the set. And even if you pound the toms at full force, they’ll still hold in place—a clear indicator of the kits’ quality and durability. Additional toms can also be added to broaden your sound.

The cymbal and snare stands—both of which are double-braced—are equally strong and sustainable. The hi-hat stand, however, isn’t as well constructed and may need to be replaced.

To be blunt, the CB5 drum heads aren’t up to snuff. Not only do they wear out fast but they also ring out endlessly when hit, mudding up your sound. You’re better off replacing the heads immediately with something like Evans G2 Coated Batter Drumheads or at the very least applying duct tape to help dampen the ringing.

The CB Drums CB5 kit selling on Amazon.com excludes cymbals which is better in the long run since you’d probably end up throwing them away after hearing them. Adding quality cymbals to a drum set can make all the difference and so we’d recommend buying Zildjian, Paiste, or Sabian cymbals together with your order of the CB Drums CB5 kit.

Some users have complained about the kick drum pedal squeaking and responding sluggishly which might mean that a new pedal is also in order like the DW 5000.CB Drums CB5 Review
The drum throne has gotten some criticism for being uncomfortable and unable to sustain much weight but that’s probably something you’d want to test out for yourself before upgrading to something better.

Many professional drummers have started out on this kit and for good reason—the CB Drums CB5 offers great value for the price. And while both Tama and Pearl sell comparable starter kits, they’re more expensive and not much better quality (e.g., Tama Imperial Star, Pearl Export Fusion, etc.) We therefore believe that the CB Drums CB5 kit is the way to go if you’re just starting out.
