It’s easy to set up right out of the box and you probably won’t have much need for the instructions. In contrast to a real drum kit, the PTED01 is lightweight and compact, making it much more portable.

The unit includes many built-in sounds: 215 percussion voices and 128 sound effects (e.g., animal sounds, explosions, creaking door, etc.) All of the sounds can be configured with various onboard effects and then saved for later recall. It also comes with 25 pre-recorded drum sets and up to 5 customizable kits to store for instant retrieval.

The PTED01 resembles a real drum kit featuring 7 touch sensitive drum pads and 2 connectable pedals: one for hi-hat and another for kick drum. The drums are made out of a rubber material that’s both smooth and durable.

[wp-review] PROS:
Many preset sounds in a variety of styles; Customizable features and a handy record

Pads respond slowly on occasion; Drum edges don’t respond to hits

There are, however, a couple of concerns regarding the drums. Firstly, the drum edges don’t respond to hits; sound is only triggered when hitting a drum directly on the head. In this regard, the PTED01 departs from a real kit. Still, with some practice, it’s possible to hit the pads in the right place consistently. But the bigger issue is the slow response time of the pads—sound is either delayed or not played at all during fast songs or when two pads are hit simultaneously.

The PTED01 foot pedals also depart from a real drum kit in one key area: the size of the pedals are very small, requiring precise footwork to push them. Unfortunately, 3rd party pedals aren’t an option since they’re incompatible with the system. The pedal wires are also too short, limiting where the pedals can be positioned.

A highlight of the PTED01 are the training tools which allow you to play along to any one of 100 preset songs. Skills can be improved by practicing specific song sections using the handy loop feature or by recording performances and then critiquing them during playback.

The sound quality of the built-in speakers is clear and crisp but can often be drowned out by other instruments in a group rehearsal/performance setting. An easy solution is to buy an inexpensive amp like a Pignose to raise the volume level during rehearsals/performances. Having said that, the Pyle-Pro PTED01 is still loud enough to disrupt family members and roommates and that’s where the headphone jack comes in handy. Simply plug in a pair of headphones and jam away without bothering anyone. Keep in mind, however, that the headphone jack is located in back of the unit and so you’ll need a pair of headphones with a long cord to give yourself enough slack.

The PTED01 can run as a MIDI controller for computer software such as Garageband via the built-in USB MIDI port (the unit doesn’t include the standard 5-pin MIDI dock).

Lastly, the Pyle-Pro PTED01 package includes a DC 12V AC adapter, a pair of drumsticks, 2 foot pedals (kick and hi-hat) and a lightweight case. The unit can also run on 6 “C” size batteries. Unfortunately, Pyle-Pro didn’t design a stand for the PTED01 so you’ll have to make do with a desk or table instead.

The Pyle-Pro PTED01 Electronic Table Digital Drum Kit is a great choice if you’re looking for a portable kit with realistic sounds that’s also user-friendly and affordable. We have no doubt that you’ll have lots of fun with it.
