Yamaha P35B Review

Yamaha P35B ReviewThe Yamaha P35B 88 keys is the newest edition to a long line of Yamaha P Series pianos. It’s an excellent choice for beginners and experienced players alike looking for a basic keyboard with realistic sounds.

The Yamaha P35B is super light-weight, compact, and portable which makes it a great keyboard to transport and play anywhere whether at home, on stage, in a studio, or in a classroom.

Aside from turning on the keyboard, there’s nothing else you have to do to start performing. You’re not burdened by tons of cable connections or additional gear. The simplicity of the Yamaha P35B makes it a wonderful keyboard to transition from the analog world into the digital one.

[wp-review] PROS:
Instrument sounds and speaker quality are top notch; Very user-friendly

CONS:
Key action is average; Doesn’t accomodate 3-pedal unit

Only the bare essentials are included in the top panel: an on/off switch, volume slider, and a Grand Piano button to access sounds—a grand total of 3 controls. Indeed, it’s hard to get lost when there’s so little clutter. Keeping with the minimalistic theme are a pair of speakers (6W each) inconspicuously placed in the top panel.

Thanks to Yamaha’s AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) technology, the sound quality of the stereo speakers resemble that of a professional stereo system—terrific to say the least. Equally exceptional are the sounds themselves consisting of acoustic and electric pianos, organs, harpsichord, vibraphone—all 10 of which are easily retrievable via the Grand Piano button.

For many pianists, key action is the most important feature to look for in a keyboard. The Yamaha P35B features the Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) keybed for all 88 keys. It works just like a real acoustic piano wherein keys in the upper register are lighter-weighted and keys in the lower register are heavier-weighted. Nevertheless, we find the key action somewhat lacking. If key action is on top of your list, other keyboards in the same price range might serve you better such as the Casio PX150.

The black keys have a satin finish which, while attractive, doesn’t match the more natural textured look of the Casio PX150 keys.

The Yamaha P Series P35B 88-Key Digital Piano only offers 32 note polyphony (the number of notes producible at one time—the greater the number, the more natural the transition). As a result, the piano experience is slightly less realistic than other Yamaha models such as the Yamaha P35, which offers 128-note polyphony. The difference, however, is almost negligible and doesn’t really concern beginners.

Of course the Yamaha P Series P35B is more than just a plug and play unit. It includes many useful features such as:

  • A dual mode function (allowing you to play any 2 sounds together)
  • A duo function (allowing you to split keys into 2 identical sections— a great teaching method)
  • A built-in metronome
  • Onboard reverb and chorus effects
  • 10 demo songs
  • 10 preset piano songs

The Yamaha P35B uses a standard 5-pin MIDI socket unlike some models which only include a USB-MIDI port.

The Yamaha P35B 88-key Digital Piano comes with a music rest and sustain footswitch. Unfortunately, buying a 3-pedal unit for the Yamaha P35B isn’t an option because it’s not designed to accommodate it (unlike the Casio PX150). As a result, beginners and more advanced players miss out on experiencing a key component to real acoustic pianos. An optional FC3 pedal, however, can be bought separately.Yamaha P35B Review

It’s understandable that a keyboard intended for basic use will leave out features that would otherwise be included. One component we especially miss seeing is a record feature which more expensive models like the Yamaha P105 offer. Having the ability to record and playback recordings is an important way to gauge progress—especially for beginners.

Despite a few shortcomings, the Yamaha P Series P35B 88-Key Digital Piano is a terrific option if you’re looking for a basic keyboard with superior speaker quality and instrument sounds. The streamlined interface also makes it easy to use and its lightness makes it very portable. We therefore give Yamaha’s latest P Series model a thumbs up.
